Before the renovations
My client had been renting her two bed one-bathroom unit in Lane Cove for several years, however decided to move into the property. Due to years of rentals and the original fixtures and fittings, it needed a full cosmetic renovation. It was essentially feeling tired and everything needed to be addressed: colour scheme, lighting, window coverings, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, flooring and storage.
Client brief
The client wanted a contemporary home with a touch of luxury, she loved black and white, which was to be the main colour scheme with hits of colour. The bathroom was the biggest concern, as the client wanted a full sized bath and to achieve this we would need to remove a linen closet. The apartment generally lacked storage so extra cabinetry, wardrobes and use of unused space were to be utilised . The renovation timeline was 3-4 months (Oct ’15 to Jan ’16), and had a generous budget for the size of the apartment, allowing for premium features.
Finishes and main features
In the bathroom I used on trend black fixtures and a beautiful patterned black and white cement floor tile. The layout was completely changed to improve space, including a full sized bath and added storage. A new kitchen was installed with the same floor tile as the bathroom, as-well-as black counters with a white subway tile. We also reconfigured the laundry floorplan and added extra lighting and a colourful yellow splashback to make this windowless area brighter.
The main living and sleeping areas received consistent interior touches with carpet, window coverings, wall colours etc. to provide a better flow through the entire space. Additional textures and pops of colour were added with artworks, accessories and soft furnishings.
Result
The results were striking, the design created an impactful first impression which is fun and vibrant, whilst still elegant and cohesive. The flow of the entire apartment was greatly improved with optimum furniture selection and placement. The introduction of quality storage (especially in the kitchen, laundry and bathroom) improved functionality and allowed for an uncluttered space.
