I have to admit I’m just a little bit obsessed with using elements of black in my designs. It’s not always easy to get across the line with a client, but the end result can be really dramatic. Every room needs to be grounded in some way, and black is the perfect way to do this, it seems to solidify a colour palette for me and pulls the whole room together. Usually I’m able to add in small elements such as the base on a coffee and side table, framing on artwork, maybe a touch of black in a rug. I haven’t yet been able to paint a whole room black, but can’t wait for the day when a client agrees to this!
The thing about using black is that it never goes out of fashion, it always looks elegant, and makes anything placed near it pop. Black can also make a space look larger not smaller like so many believe. Think about it, black smooths out lines, every woman feels great in that little black dress. It does the same for a space and makes the defined lines in a space blur a little creating that sense of a larger space.
So here’s how to incorporate black into you r design:
Black accents
Use artwork, accent furniture such as side tables, or soft furnishings such as rugs, curtains, or cushions to add in your touch of black.

Flooring
If you have bright white walls then there’s nothing better to contrast this than black stained floor boards. This look is classic and seriously timeless, a design decision you will never regret.
Feature wall
If you have a light filled room choose your longest wall and paint it black, this looks stunning with a lighter piece of furniture place against it such as a light coloured sofa.
Whole room
If you’re really brave then why not commit 100%, either tile a bathroom floor to ceiling in black, paint a whole room such as a smaller lounge, study or dining room. The final result will be truly dramatic a look you will never get bored of.
